MORGAN CO., Ala. (WAFF) – Morgan County commissioners voted Tuesday to approve a one-year moratorium on a proposed bitcoin mining data center in Somerville. The proposal from VoltCore has drawn opposition from residents who live near the proposed site on Union Road.More than 450 people signed petitions against the project in recent weeks, citing concerns about noise, the environment and the project’s overall impact on the community.County Commission Chairman Ray Long said those concerns played a major role in the decision.“Today we passed this resolution putting a pause button so we can go back and study and get more details about how does it really affects the environment, the noise and you heard a lot of the concerns in here today,” Long said. “Those are not made up, those are true.”Long said the moratorium gives the county time to study the project and better understand its potential effects.Residents who attended Tuesday’s meeting said they were pleased with the decision.“I think it was a great step to help us,” Somerville resident Lyndsey Hutson said. “I know that this is a newer phenomenon across the country.”Hutson said her property is peaceful and that the issue is personal for her.“Our property right now is very peaceful,” Hutson said. “I lost my son six months ago to brain cancer so this is a very close thing to my heart. I need my peace and we’re all out there for a reason.”Click Here to Subscribe on YouTube: Watch the latest WAFF 48 news, sports & weather videos on our YouTube channel!Copyright 2026 WAFF.
