The ripple effect of learning at MIT | MIT News

At MIT, innovation doesn’t only happen in the lab. It also happens in the people who never stop learning. After nearly a decade in the Netherlands modeling data for aerospace and semiconductor companies, Ignacio Vazquez wanted his work to reach beyond code and computation. “I was solving technical problems, but they didn’t connect to the people behind the systems,” he says. “I wanted to understand how decisions were made, and how ideas moved from research to impact.”That goal led him to MIT’s System Design and Management (SDM) program, which offers enrollees a joint master’s degree in the School of Engineering and the MIT Sloan School of Management. The experience broadened his perspective and set the stage for the role he would soon take on at the Institute.Today, as industry and certificate director of MIT’s SDM program, Vazquez helps build collaborations that connect MIT faculty and students with global companies tackling complex challenges. In this role, he faces a new kind of complexity: Instead of analyzing systems, he helps design them — linking people and ideas to move discoveries from research into practice. The position demands a different kind of fluency: operating across disciplines, managing relationships, and translating between technical depth and strategic vision.Recognizing that his work now depended as much on strategy as on science, Vazquez set out to keep learning — finding new ways to grow while contributing to MIT’s mission.A bridge between research and industryIn that search for advanced professional development, Vazquez discovered a program at MIT Professional Education, a division of the Institute offering learning programs for professionals around the globe, including those at MIT.MIT Professional Education’s Advanced Study Program (ASP) allows enrollees to take regular graduate courses of their choice without having to enroll in a formal degree program at MIT. The program offered Vasquez the same academic rigor as a degree program, but with the flexibility to fit within his full-time work role. He began taking one class each semester — choosing subjects that challenged his perspective and expanded his ability to lead across disciplines. His first course through ASP in spring 2023, 15.401 (Managerial Finance) taught by Tong Liu, assistant professor of finance at MIT Sloan, proved transformative. Encouraged by his supervisor at MIT, Vazquez enrolled in the course to gain fluency in the language of business. “That class helped me talk to senior executives in a way that resonates,” he says. “It taught me to translate between strategy and science — between what a CFO needs to hear and what an MIT researcher needs to explain.”The experience underscored MIT’s culture of multidisciplinary learning — solving problems at the systems level, where progress depends on combining diverse skills and perspectives. Those lessons soon paid off: Vazquez now leads discussions that span materials-science breakthroughs and balance sheets, often in the same meeting.“That dance — moving between technical depth and strategic perspective — is part of what people consider the magic of MIT,” he says.Turning coursework into collaborationThe spirit of “mens et manus” — MIT’s motto of “mind and hand” — has guided MIT Professional Education since its inception in 1949, reflecting its longstanding role within the Institute’s tradition of applied learning. That same hands-on ethos shaped one of Vazquez’s most ambitious projects. In the spring 2024 class 15.320 (Strategic Organizational Design), taught by Thomas Malone, the Patrick J. McGovern (1959) Professor of Management and the founding director of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, Vazquez drew on Malone’s “Superminds” framework — which examines how groups of people and computers can work together as collectively intelligent systems that solve problems no individual could tackle alone — to explore how large organizations make complex decisions.Vazquez proposed collaborating with the Mayo Clinic to test those ideas in the real world, modeling how medical teams triage patients across vast networks of specialists. The effort sparked conversations between Mayo Clinic leaders and Malone’s research group and offered Vazquez a front-row view of how academic concepts evolve through real-world application. “It wasn’t just about learning the framework,” he says. “It was about contributing back to it — offering feedback that could make it stronger.”“Ignacio approached the class as a co-investigator,” Malone says. “The questions he raised, the perspective he brought from the Mayo collaboration, pushed our thinking in new directions. Programs like this sustain MIT’s tradition of lifelong learning, where the flow of ideas between faculty and professionals strengthens both research and practice.”Although the proposed sponsored project ultimately shifted due to changing priorities at Mayo, the collaboration lived on. Building on the relationships Vazquez helped establish, an SDM student he worked with was able to carry the effort forward and complete a thesis with Mayo researchers.“That’s the ripple effect,” he says. “Learning fuels research, research fuels teaching, and it all feeds back into MIT’s mission.”A community of lifelong learners Each course has added a new layer to that mission. In class 15.39 (New Enterprises), taught in fall 2023 by Bill Aulet, managing director of the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, Vazquez built a startup concept around pet health — an exercise that taught him how complex organizational decisions really are. “You’re not pitching to one person,” he says. “You’re engaging a whole system of stakeholders who have to align before anything moves forward.”For Vazquez, the Advanced Study Program has been more than a vehicle of professional development — he is part of a global community of lifelong learners connected by curiosity and purpose.“I’m in a role that connects faculty, students, and companies,” he says. “These courses keep me intellectually sharp and grounded in the same learning culture that defines MIT.”That culture has touched even his personal life. During his very first class, he met the woman who would become his wife. “You never know what you’ll take away from a course,” he laughs. “Sometimes it’s a new skill, sometimes it’s a new perspective — and sometimes it’s a partner for life.”Bhaskar Pant, executive director of MIT Professional Education, sees Vazquez’s story as emblematic of the Institute’s impact. “As with industry professionals around the globe, when MIT staff invest in their own learning, the effects extend far beyond the individual,” Pant says. “Ignacio’s journey shows how applying MIT’s ideas in real-world settings strengthens the Institute from within — and how MIT Professional Education provides the access and structure that make that possible.”For Vazquez, the takeaway is simple. “At MIT, learning doesn’t stop when you graduate, it just changes shape,” he says. This spring, Vazquez learned more about the different ways in which organizations innovate in class 15.374 (Organizing for Innovation), taught by Pierre Azoulay, the International Programs Professor of Management at MIT Sloan and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. “That’s what drives me,” Vazquez says. “There’s always another layer to understand — and another way to apply what I learn here at MIT. The opportunity is there for other people across the Institute to do the same, especially with support like tuition reimbursement — it’s about unlocking that potential and extending MIT’s impact in ways many people don’t realize are within reach.”
