Wimbledon 2026 – Coco Gauff holds serve and nerves to win consecutive grass matches
Gauff has never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon, and in her third meeting on a third different surface this year with Sierra, Gauff has a hat-trick at the perfect moment.
On a surface where she had not won for two years, Gauff has now picked up back-to-back wins on grass and is building rhythm. The ecstatic celebrations towards her team were reflective of a hard-fought battle across two hours and eight minutes.
A routine first set only ignited Sierra in her fight back, determined not to lose a third straight match to the USA star since January. She had reached the fourth round at SW19 last year, her best major result to date.
Sierra’s groundstrokes and forehand returns pushed Gauff to the limit, as Sierra broke with a rocket return for 4-3 in the final set. But she could not serve out the match and felt nerves with a string of faults on the way to the tiebreak.
The two-time Grand Slam singles champion showed her experience on the big stage in the deciding duel, as well as her instinct in the crunch moments.
At 7-7, the 22-year-old hit a superbly flicked backhand while facing away from the net and took the lead. What that match will do for her confidence is to be seen in the next round, which starts on 3 July.
