Dogecoin developers spar over security model, reject claims of Litecoin dependence

Dogecoin developers and the community are engaged in a “security model debate” over Dogecoin’s merged-mining structure.

According to blockchain media outlet U.Today on July 19 (local time), the debate has focused on whether Dogecoin relies on Litecoin for security or instead leans on multiple merged-mined Scrypt-based layer-1 (L1) coins.

The controversy began when Dogecoin Foundation developer Paulo Vidal raised the issue, asking, “Why does Dogecoin still depend on another blockchain’s security?” Vidal said Dogecoin offers high incentives for merged mining but has not established an independent mining base. He also said security is effectively tied to Litecoin, and asked whether Dogecoin ultimately needs to secure itself or should continue relying on Litecoin.

Dogecoin developer Chromatic X responded head-on. He said, “Dogecoin does not depend on Litecoin,” adding that it “depends on all merged-mined layer-1 Scrypt coins.” He argued that Dogecoin’s security structure should not be seen as dependence on a single chain, but as a merged-mining structure in which multiple chains using the same proof-of-work algorithm are linked together.

Merged mining is a method of mining two or more coins at the same time without splitting mining resources, using the same hash power and the same proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm. Dogecoin, Litecoin, Namecoin and other Scrypt-based coins support this structure. In terms of profitability, the Dogecoin-Litecoin combination remains the largest axis.

Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus also joined the debate. He said, “Doge is the most profitable Scrypt coin to mine,” adding that “auxiliary proof-of-work (AuxPoW) only enables it to be mined alongside any other Scrypt coin.” The remarks were read as emphasising that, given Dogecoin’s strong mining incentives, merged mining is not a mechanism that makes it subordinate to Litecoin but a profit structure that operates across the broader Scrypt ecosystem.

The debate has prompted a fresh look at the Dogecoin-Litecoin merge mining structure introduced in August 2014. At the time, Dogecoin faced concerns that it could be vulnerable to a 51 percent attack due to a relatively small hashrate, and adopting merged mining was an option to boost network defence. Now, 12 years later, questions have resurfaced over whether Dogecoin should shift to an independent security system.

But it is uncertain whether abandoning merged mining would be accepted in practice. Timothy Stebbing, a director of the Dogecoin Foundation, said, “Most merged-mined Scrypt-based cryptocurrencies depend on Dogecoin issuance to maintain mining economics.” That means Dogecoin is not simply the party being protected, but also plays a key role in mining incentives for other chains participating in merged mining.

Against this backdrop, the debate is spreading beyond technical issues into a philosophy of network operation. Chromatic X described the claim that “Dogecoin should protect itself on its own” as a matter of philosophical purity, while some community participants say it is time to consider changing the structure. For now, no conclusion has been reached on whether Dogecoin will strengthen an independent mining base or maintain the merged-mining system.

Ultimately, the issue is less whether Dogecoin depends on any single chain for security than whether the current merged-mining structure can provide sufficient security and mining incentives over the long term. Dogecoin both uses hash power from other Scrypt-based chains and has become a core asset underpinning their mining profitability, meaning a structural change could affect the economic balance across the ecosystem, beyond a simple technical choice. Future discussions are likely to hinge on how to weigh security benefits from greater independence against the efficiency provided by merged mining.

My point on this dumb argument is that:

– Is Dogecoin currently dependent on Litecoin for its security?

– If Litecoin stopped operating tomorrow, what would happen to Dogecoin’s security?

– Are miners securing Litecoin alone, or are the additional rewards from Dogecoin and…
