Today is Presidents Day 2026, a federal holiday and bank holiday, and while most schools are closed on Presidents’ Day, many grocery stores and retailers open today. But is the stock market open on Presidents Day, and are futures, bond markets closed today?
President’s Day is not a holiday for everyone and not everyone has off work today, Monday, Feb. 16, since Congress has never declared it a national holiday. The observed federal holiday is officially called Washington’s Birthday; however, neither Congress nor the president has stipulated that the name of the holiday observed as Washington’s Birthday be changed to Presidents’ Day.
Also, each state has the freedom to determine its legal holidays, which is why you will see date and name discrepancies: Presidents Day is a New Jersey state holiday, but Pennsylvania spells their state holiday as President’s Day, while Delaware does not celebrate Presidents Day at all on Feb. 16, and New York State celebrates Washington’s Birthday.
Whether or not your state celebrates Presidents’ Day or Washington’s Birthday, here’s what to know about stock market hours, holidays and whether the stock market is open on Presidents Day 2026.

How to invest over Presidents Day
You can’t execute trades on bond market holidays, so unfortunately, the days before and after Presidents Day are typically weak days for the market, according to MarketBeat. Although for reasons not entirely clear, experts say, the period between Christmas and New Year’s Day have historically been times when investors see the most gains.
