Invesco Survey: 61% of Central Banks Say US Debt Hurts Dollar’s Reserve Status – News and Statistics

Jun 29, 2026

A survey published on Monday by independent global investment management firm Invesco reveals that sovereign wealth funds and central banks are reassessing their portfolios due to unprecedented geopolitical shifts. According to the survey, 61% of central banks polled by Invesco stated that US debt levels negatively affect the dollar’s long-term position as a reserve asset. The survey, which covered 90 sovereign wealth funds and 54 central banks managing US$29 trillion in assets, indicates a growing turn toward energy assets and rising concerns about the dollar. The portfolio reassessment is driven by factors including trade tariffs, closed shipping channels, and conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.Invesco’s head of research, Benjamin Jones, commented that in a world of inflation shocks, geopolitical fragmentation, and more concentrated markets, investors are rethinking old assumptions about diversification and redesigning portfolios to withstand a wider range of outcomes. He noted that resilience is becoming a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have.Approximately 80% of those surveyed said energy security and energy transition infrastructure were the most credible investments for making portfolios more resilient. Infrastructure reached 9% of sovereign wealth fund assets in 2026. The report also found that the race to build energy-hungry AI infrastructure added to the appeal of these investments. The positive bond-equity correlation in recent years has eroded reliance on bonds for diversification, with more focus shifting to liquidity and real assets.
