Fed July 2026 Meeting: Rate Decision, Oil Prices, and Inflation Outlook &#8211; News and Statistics

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to maintain its current interest rate stance at its upcoming July meeting, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. However, a recent surge in oil prices has led investors to significantly increase their expectations that a rate increase could occur later this year.

At the beginning of 2026, many economic analysts anticipated at least one rate reduction during the year. Yet, a resurgence of inflation, driven by higher energy costs, has caused some forecasters to now predict higher rates before the end of the year.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has committed to bringing inflation back to the central bank’s 2% target while providing limited insight into his economic outlook. During the Fed’s June meeting, Warsh did not submit individual economic projections, though nearly half of the policymakers indicated they would support a rate hike later this year.

Oil prices have climbed sharply in recent weeks, exceeding $100 per barrel on Thursday, which experts suggest indicates that inflation may remain a persistent challenge in the near term.

Nigel Green, the CEO of investment firm deVere Group, commented in a July 23 email that the case for the Fed to hold rates steady has become more difficult to justify than it appeared just a few weeks ago.

The probability of a rate hike at the Wednesday meeting has been increasing, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool, which uses 30-day Fed funds futures prices to predict rate decisions. The tool now indicates a 38% likelihood that the central bank will raise its benchmark rate next week, up from 12% a week earlier.

Nevertheless, the CME FedWatch predicts the greater probability is that the Fed will keep its benchmark rate unchanged within a target range of 3.5% to 3.75%.

The Federal Open Market Committee, the 12-member voting body responsible for setting rates, is scheduled to announce its next interest rate decision on Wednesday, July 29, at 2 p.m. ET. The announcement will be followed by a press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET led by Warsh. Experts say it is unlikely that economists and investors will gain new insights into Warsh’s economic views, given his stated intention to share less forward guidance.

Economists surveyed by FactSet predict the Fed will hold interest rates steady at 3.5% to 3.75%. This would mark the fifth consecutive meeting in which the central bank has left its benchmark rate unchanged.

Most experts expect the Fed to remain on the sidelines at its July meeting. However, they noted that if inflation were to reignite amid escalations in the U.S.-Iran war, it could increase the probability of a rate hike later in 2026.
